Katavento, the Pastel Place in Merton Abbey Mills has a new owners and they have done a lot with the place! Well, not exactly new. Katavento has been around for a while but the very nice Flavio and Luciana have sold it to a new family of keen Brazilian food enthusiasts. Mum Silene and her children Francisco, Luciana e Bruno have taken over Katavento Pastel in Merton Abbey Mills and added their own spin to the place. The team is very experienced, having ran 3 stands in the Kings Road Market on Saturdays and have added loads of new items to the menu. With the closure of Pastel Brazil’s stand in the 7 Sisters Market (they now only sell their dough), Katavento is the only Brazilian snack bar specialising in Pastel in town.
“I kept the pastels just the same but I added my own taste to the recipes” says mum Silene. Now as well as Pastel you can get a nice generous portion of Feijoada for £6 or Escondidinho de Carne Seca e Cassava for £8.
On Saturdays and Sundays, the team is also braving the cold to make some Picanha on the griddle. The Picanha is served with a bit of rice, farofa and onion, pepper and tomato vinagrete. They have also raised the bar on the dessert side with Brigadeiros, Beijinhos de Coco and Cajuzinho as well as Passion Fruit mousse and Pudim de Leite. And if you’re looking for a great breakfast or mid-afternoon snack, why not come down for some Cassava or Corn cake or a Pamonha?
But if you’re in the lookout for a real Paulista experience, order a couple of Pastel and a beer. Katavento serves Skol, Brahma and Bohemia. You can also order a Caipirinha.
